Sadly, Safire was born with a rare genetic disorder called Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards Syndrome. This condition occurs when a baby has three copies of the eighteenth chromosome instead of the usual two. Only about one in every six thousand babies is born with this condition, and most of them do not survive to their first birthday.
Despite the odds, Safire fought hard. She underwent numerous surgeries and spent many months in the hospital. But her little body was just too weak to fight any longer. Safire passed away on August 13, 2009, just two days before her third birthday.
Safire was a brave and determined little girl, and she inspired everyone who knew her. She will never be forgotten.
